old news23rd February 2008On Thursday 24th January Mutter Slater, Ady and I headed for the BBC studios in Plymouth to record a session and an interview for Vic Morgan’s radio show. We recorded three numbers and had a right laugh during the interview, which went out Vic’s show on Monday 4th February, ahead of the Mutter Slater band’s début at the Seven Stars in Totnes, Devon. That was a fine night – the audience was a mixture of people who’d picked up on the MSB project, including Vic, and Stackridge fans that had come to check on Mutter’s progress. It went down really well with both parties. On Friday 8th February the Steamer Ducks returned to the Park Hotel in Weymouth, to mark guv’nor Pete’s imminent departure from the pub he transformed from a grim den into a great live music venue. It was a wondrous night, with Robbie McIntosh in blinding form again. Clive Ashley, Nick Gomer, Steve Mutter, Ady and I completed the line-up. On Saturday 9th Back Street Blues played at the Plume of Feathers in Sherborne, and the following Saturday, 16th, BSB returned to the Ropemakers, West Street, Bridport where we were joined by Nick Gomer, who played some mean blues harp. I was asked to get together a blues band at short notice for a gig at the Rock Hotel in Weymouth the following night, and managed to recruit the services of Mike Biggs, Clive Ashley and Nick Gomer. As is often the case, a hastily assembled bunch of mates that share a love for the blues pulled off a fine performance. On Monday 18th Mutter Slater and I headed off to Mojo Studios in Torquay, Devon to finish recording and begin mixing the Mutter Slater Band’s début album. I’m quietly (if not a little noisily) optimistic about how it’s shaping up – more news as it arrives. Back Street Blues play at the Westgate in Taunton, Somerset on Saturday 23rd February, followed by a début appearance at the Borough Arms (a.k.a. Goldies) in Dorchester on Thursday 28th. On Sunday 2nd March, Ady Milward and I team up with jazz chanteuse Zoe Schwarz and guitarist Rob Koral at the Rock Hotel, Abbotsbury Road, Weymouth, starting at 6.30pm. Chris Lonergan
