bass lessons


I teach bass guitar on a one-to-one basis, concentrating on right- and left-hand techniques, scales, harmony, ear training and the role of the bass in a band situation.

My approach is to mix what the student wants to learn with what I think they should learn, shaping the lessons individually. If a student brings in a CD of a song they want to learn we’ll learn the bass line, at the same time working out how that line works within the structure of the song, and what’s happening harmonically.

It’s also got to be fun!

In terms of qualifications, well, mainly it’s 30 years of playing blues, soul, pop, jazz and improvised music in everything from a duo to a 22-piece band, but I’ve also got a distinction in grade 5 music theory, a Certificate in Music from Poole College and a Diploma in Music from Weymouth College.
